Applying Medication Therapy Problem Frameworks for Authentic Assessment to Advance Pharmacists Clinical Reasoning

Hosted by the COF Junior Faculty Community

The ACCP Pharmacotherapy Didactic Curriculum Toolkit serves as a foundational guide for pharmacy education, but by itself, it is not enough for developing the deep clinical reasoning required for pharmacy practice. This webinar challenges the notion of the toolkit as a final destination for pharmacy curricula and, instead, explores how centering drug therapy knowledge around Medication Therapy Problem (MTP) frameworks can better equip students for real-world decision-making. Participants will examine how MTP frameworks can authentically contextualize the toolkit to enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and person-centered care. Through case-based discussions and curriculum design strategies, attendees will gain actionable insights into using the MTP framework to bridge the gap between foundational pharmacotherapy knowledge and independent clinical reasoning.

Objectives:

  • Explore how Medication Therapy Problem (MTP) frameworks provide a structured approach to applying pharmacotherapy knowledge in patient care.
  • Examine the role of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Pharmacotherapy Didactic Curriculum Toolkit as within pharmacy curricula including its limitations in fostering clinical reasoning.
  • Demonstrate strategies for integrating MTP frameworks into pharmacy curricula to improve clinical reasoning through authentic assessments.
